The Great Madras hotel review

Zhuang Jia Wen

I wanted a hotel that would immerse me in the culture of Little India, so The Great Madras caught my attention. This refurbished shophouse is done up with colorful Indian decor and Bollywood posters throughout.

With its central location, I looked forward to experiencing the bustling Serangoon Road area.

Table of Contents

Pros

  • Authentic Indian Vibe: From the patterned bed linens to pops of teal, pink and orange, the decor celebrates Indian culture. The Bollywood movie posters add to the immersive ambiance.
  • Friendly Service: The staff welcomed me warmly and were eager to provide recommendations to experience Little India’s cuisine and culture.
  • Complimentary Breakfast: A breakfast of parathas, lentil soups, and chai is included. It made for an authentic, energetic start to each day.
  • Central Location: Right on Serangoon Road, The Great Madras lets you dive into the sights, sounds, and smells of Little India. The Mustafa Centre and Farrer Park MRT are minutes away.

Cons

  • Compact Rooms: The rooms retain a cozy, shophouse feel but can be snug for more than 1 person with limited luggage space.
  • Noise: Given its lively location, light sleepers may find street noise audible even with windows closed. Earplugs are advised.
  • Limited Amenities: Aside from breakfast, there’s no restaurant or room service. The focus is on location over luxury facilities.

Conclusion

For an authentic cultural experience in Singapore’s Little India, The Great Madras hits the mark with charm and convenience. The Indian-inspired decor and energetic surroundings transport you.

Travelers who prioritize location, want to immerse in Little India, and aren’t bothered by modest rooms will appreciate this unique hotel. I enjoyed my stay!
